8 tips to get the most mileage out of your linen sheets

Quality pure linen bedding is well worth the investment and here at The Linen Project, we believe in the quality of our linen!

Linen is naturally a very durable fibre, in fact, it is one of the strongest natural fibres there is, approximately 30% thicker and stronger than cotton. So when your old cotton sheets are giving up the ghost, your trusty linen ones will actually be improving with age!

Pure, high-quality linen is a low-maintenance bedding option, but there are a few simple care recommendations that will ensure your bedding lasts the distance.

  1. Gentle washing is key

Machine wash your linen sheets in cold or cool water on a gentle cycle. Opt for a mild, eco-friendly detergent to preserve the fibre's natural integrity. Say no to dry cleaning, bleach or harsh chemicals.

  1. Separate and protect

Wash your linen sheets separately from heavier items or items with zip and velcro to prevent friction and pilling. Allow your linen freedom to move in the tub!

  1. Line dry in the shade:

After washing, gently shake out your linen sheets and duvet covers to minimize wrinkles. You can tumble dry them on low heat if you must, but we recommend air-drying them in the shade for linen longevity. Direct sunlight can help naturally bleach white linens, but for coloured items sunlight exposure will lead to fading over time.

  1. Embrace the wrinkles

Why iron when you don’t have to?! Linen's natural beauty lies in its relaxed, effortless look.

  1. Say no to fabric softener:

Fabric softener leaves a coating on fabrics, reducing breathability and absorbency of the linen. This coating can damage the natural fibres and reduce your linen's lifespan. In any case, linen naturally gets softer with every wash so there is no need for extra softener. You can learn how to soften sheets faster in this guide.

  1. Store with care:

The holy grail is a cool, dry and dark linen cupboard. When storing your linen sheets, make sure they are completely dry and fold them loosely to allow the fibres to breathe. Avoid using plastic bags/boxes, as they can trap moisture and affect the colour of your sheets. The Linen Project storage bag is the perfect way to keep your linen neat and tidy.

  1. Avoid too much sunlight :

Sunlight can cause linen fibres to become brittle, weakening the fabric's overall strength. Too much direct sunlight can cause fading or discolouration.

  1. Have more than one set:

Linen is a durable bedding option, but like any fabric it will eventually wear down over time. You can extend the life of your linen sheets by rotating between two or more sets. We follow the European rule of one set on the bed, one in the wash and one in the linen cupboard. Browse our lovely linen
